IT'S DUES PAYING TIME AGAIN

Annual Dues for the year 2014 are now due by December 31, 2013.  Endowed, Life and 50 Year Members are exempt from the payment of dues.  All others should look at your dues card.  If it states your dues have been paid to December 31, 2013, then you should make a payment to your lodge this December month.  Dues in Irving Lodge #1218 are $100 per year.  We thank those who have already remitted the 2014 year’s dues.  We also send a special message of thanks and appreciation to those who have made donations during this, and former years.

IRVING MASONIC LODGE “GIFT OF LIFE” BLOOD DRIVE

There is no substitute for blood when needed. It is indeed a “GIFT OF LIFE” to someone when you donate.  On Saturday, December 14, 2013 Carter Blood Care will join with Irving Lodge in the collection of blood at the Irving Mall.  Age is not a factor.  Only your health and/or medication may prevent you from giving.

BEAUTIFUL NEW FLOORS

Brethren we now have a new vinyl floor installed in the kitchen and small dining area.  With the new paint job done by some of our Brothers, the downstairs area is now really nice.  Dean Donaldson contributed to the lodge to get the floor put in, as it was really needed.  We hope that all our Brothers will feel appreciative of the new look and contribute as much as they can to offset the costs.

LAUGHING MATTERS

LAUGHING MATTERS

I before E except when you are on a feisty heist on a weird, beige, weighty, foreign neighbor.

Grandma: Were you a good girl at church today, Missy?
Missy: Yes, I was.  When the nice man offered me a whole plate of money, I said, “No, thank you”.

Sunday school teacher: Phil, who was the first woman?
Phil: I don’t know.
Sunday school teacher: I’ll give you a hint.  It had something to do with an apple.
Phil: Oh, I know.  Granny Smith!

The preacher stopped in the middle of his powerful sermon to ask, “Who is God, anyway?”
From the back of the church, a little boy said, “God is a chauffeur.”
“Why do you say that?” asked the preacher.
“Because,” said the boy, “He drove Adam and Eve out of the Garden of Eden.”

FRESH PAINT ON THE WALLS

Irving’s C.J. Range Memorial Hall got a fresh coat of paint Saturday morning August 17th.  Brothers and family members worked their brushes and rollers to beautify the Lodge.  Two columns and some walls got blue accents.  Come see how nice it looks.  Worshipful Master David Gisler gives his thanks to all those who came.

LAUGHING MATTERS

My young grandson called the other day to wish me Happy Birthday.  He asked me how old I was, and I told him, 80.  My grandson was quiet for a moment, and then he asked, “Did you start at 1?”

One of the better ways to get back on your feet is to miss a few car payments.

A grandmother was telling her little granddaughter what her own childhood was like.  “We used to skate outside on a pond.  I had a swing made from a tire in our front yard.  We rode our pony.  We picked wild raspberries in the woods.”  The little girl was wide-eyed, taking this all in.  At last she said, “I sure wish I’d gotten to know you sooner!”

“Perhaps you sent a lovely card, or sat quietly in a chair; perhaps you sent a floral piece, if so we saw it there; perhaps you spoke the kindest words, as any friend could say; perhaps you were not there at all, just thought of us that day.  Whatever you did to console our hearts, we thank you so much whatever the part.”

ENLIGHTENED PERSPECTIVES BY ANDY ROONEY

I've  learned.... That the best classroom in the world is at the feet of an elderly person.

I've  learned.... That being kind is more important than being right.

I've  learned.... That you should never say no to a gift from a child.

I've  learned.... That sometimes all a person needs is a hand to hold and a heart to  understand.

I've  learned.... That love, not time, heals all wounds.

I've  learned.... That everyone you meet deserves to be greeted with a smile.

I've  learned.... That opportunities are never lost; someone will take the ones you miss.

I've  learned.... That a smile is an inexpensive way to improve your looks.

I've  learned.... That the less time I have to work with, the more things I get done.

KNOCK AT THE DOOR

A new pastor was visiting the homes of his parishioners.

At one house it seemed obvious that someone was at home, but no answer came to his repeated knocks at the door. Therefore, he took out a card and wrote "Revelation 3:20" on the back of it and stuck it in the door.

When the offering was processed the following Sunday, he found that his card had been returned. Added to it was this cryptic message, "Genesis 3:10."  Reaching for his Bible to check out the citation, he broke up in gales of laughter.

Revelation 3:20 begins "Behold, I stand at the door and knock." Genesis 3:10 reads, "I heard your voice in the garden and I was afraid, for I was naked."

IN HONOR

Brother David R. Gisler was born on May 13, 1942 in Peru, Illinois. As a teenager he joined the local DeMolay Chapter where he was exposed to the philosophy of Masonry.  He was made a Master Mason on November 7, 1964 in St. John’s Lodge #13 in Peru, Illinois at the young age of 22 years.  He affiliated as a Plural Member in Irving Lodge #1218 on April 11, 1995. He retired from Freeman Decorating Co. to spend more time with the Lodge and attention to his family. Brother Gisler also spends  time with his favorite sport of golf where he also works part time. He purchased an Endowed Membership in Irving Lodge in 2003.

He first held an office in the Lodge as the Junior Steward in 2008.  As he progress through the line of officers, he also attended the Grand Lodge Warden’s Retreat and Leadership Training Course in 2011. With a natural course of progression, Brother Gisler will become Worshipful Master of Irving Lodge on June 29, 2013.  The address and phone number for David and his wife Jill are listed with the officers on this bulletin.  We wish Brother David the best in health and happiness for him and his family during the coming year.

INSTALLATION OF OFFICERS

Irving Lodge #1218 A.F. & A.M. is pleased to announce the Open Installation of Officers on Saturday Evening, June 29, 2013 at 7:00 P.M. This Ceremony is open to all Masons, their friends, family, and all who are interested in our Lodge and the Masonic Fraternity. The ceremony is enlightening for those who are not familiar with the intent and purposes of this ancient Order of Freemasonry. Refreshments and a reception will be held downstairs in the C. J. Range Memorial Hall after the installation. Be sure and invite your friends and neighbors.

LAST CALL FOR ANNUAL DUES TO THE LODGE

The Masonic Year is coming to a close and there are still a few who have not paid the Annual Dues for the Year 2013. On June 23 the Lodge must close the book and those who have not paid their 2013 dues will be subject to suspension.  If you are facing this and have a serious problem with paying your dues, contact the Worshipful Master or the Secretary.

PASSING THE BATON

In or about 1969, the Secretary of Irving Lodge, Brother Roscoe Christy suffered a heart attack.
Past Master Dean Alexander filled in for about 6 weeks.  In October, 1979, Brother Christy could no longer perform the duties of Secretary and passed the Baton of Secretary to Dean Alexander. In June, 1980 Past Master Dean Alexander was elected and installed as the Secretary. For 32 + years, everyone was aware that Brother Alexander was the Secretary. But time moves on, and there always becomes a time to make a change.  With a little training, Past Master John Thalacker is attempting to prepare himself to accept the duties of Secretary of Irving Lodge.  As the Worshipful Master deserves the pledge
of your support, so does a new Secretary, as he faces the many unfamiliar situations that will come his way.   This, my Brothers, for the best interest of Irving Lodge, is a pledge that you and I should be happy to extend.

JUST A THOUGHT BUT, THINKING DEEPLY

You cannot win if you do not begin.

The best way to usually get the last word is to apologize.

The best way to forget your own problems is to help someone solve his.

When God measures a man, He puts the tape around the heart instead of the head.

A person’s true character is revealed by what he does when no one is watching.

Most people wish to serve God – but only in an advisory capacity.

It’s good to be a Christian and know it, but it’s better to be a Christian and show it!

Your words are windows to your heart.

A shut mouth gathers no foot.

A FOOLISH THOUGHT

A new business was opening and one of the owner’s friends wanted to send flowers for the occasion. They arrived at the new business site and the owner read the card. It said, “Rest in Peace.”  The owner was angry and went to the florist to complain. After he had told the florist of the obvious mistake and how angry he was, the florist gave him a rather concerned look as he tried to share his perspective.

“Sir, I’m sorry for the mistake, but rather than getting angry, you should imagine this; somewhere there is a funeral taking place today and they have flowers with a note saying, “Congratulations on your new location.”

IN MEMORIAM

Brother Charles J. Swanson was born on April 23, 1927. He received the Master Masons’ Degree on May 25, 1956 in Virginia City Lodge #315 in Savonburg, Kansas.  He affiliated with Irving Lodge #1218 on December 8, 1964.  He was a dual member of Virginia City Lodge #315.  He was presented with the Grand Lodge 50 Year Masonic Service Award by Irving Lodge #1218 on December 2, 2005.  Brother Swanson was called to the Celestial Lodge Above on April 16, 2013.

“If my parting has left a void, Then fill it with remembered joys. A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss, Oh yes, these things I too will miss”. (An excerpt from the poem “I’M FREE”)

We dedicate this bulletin to the memory of Brother Charles J. Swanson as we record his Passing in our Lodge of Sorrow.

STEWARDS PICNIC

The Steward’s of Irving Lodge send all our friends and members a special invitation to attend this outdoor picnic at Fritz Park in Irving on Saturday May 18, 2013 from 11 AM to 1 PM. Bring lawn chairs and an instrument to play or something to play with. And don’t forget to bring the kids. JUST A LITTLE HUMOR

A distraught senior citizen phones her doctor’s office.  “Is it true,” she wanted to know, “that the medication you prescribed has to be taken for the rest of my life?” “Yes, I’m afraid so,” the doctor told her. There was a moment of silence before the senior lady replied, “I’m wondering, then, just how serious is my condition because this prescription is marked “NO REFILLS.”

Inside me lives a skinny man trying to get out, but I can usually shut him up with ice cream and cookies

Always remember, a smile adds face value.

BEATITUDES FOR MASONS

(copied from the Masonic Review, First Quarter, Book 3, 1960)

“Blessed is the Mason who casts aside doubts and fear and puts his trust in God; for his Faith will bring joy to his soul.  Blessed is he whose cheery smile and hearty handclasp at his lodge room door radiates a sincere Welcome; for gracious Hospitality is a test for Brotherly Love.   Blessed is the Mason who is ever ready to extend a helping hand in relief; for the greatest of these is charity.   Blessed is he whose service to the craft is a labor of Love; for his is a heart that is happy and aglow with melody.  Blessed is the Mason whose morality is on the square, conduct by the Plumb and who meets all men on the Level; for his is a Friendship that is of more value than gold.  Blessed is the Mason whose numerous visits bring comfort to the sick and to the weary; for his cable Tow is truly imbued with Love for his Brethren.”

“Dear God, If we come back as something, please don’t let me be Jennifer Horton, because I hate her.” Denise

INTERESTING THOUGHTS

Appreciate every single thing you have, especially your friends! Life is too short and friends are too few.

Stand up to be seen, speak up to be heard, shut up to be appreciated.

Every right implies a responsibility; every opportunity an obligation; every possession a duty.

Our criticism of others is not because they have faults, but because their faults are different from ours.

Good deeds speak for themselves. The tongue only interrupts their eloquence.

We wish for you and all of us a sense of humor and the power to laugh.
