Dues in Irving Lodge #1218 remain $100 per year.  We thank those who have already remitted the 2015 year’s dues.  We also send a special message of thanks and appreciation to those who have made donations for Lodge needs and remittances during this, and former years.

AT THE DENTIST

Junior said to the dentist, “Doc, I’m in one heck of a hurry.  I have two buddies sitting out in my truck waiting for us to go deer hunting, so forget about the anesthetic.  I don’t have time for the gums to get numb.  I just want you to pull the tooth and be done with it.  The dentist thought to himself, “My goodness, this is surely a very brave man asking to have his tooth pulled without using anything to kill the pain.”  So the dentist asks him, “Which tooth is it sir?”  Junior turned to his wife and said, “Open your mouth honey and show him.

Call: (972) 253-5600 or email us at irving1218@verizon.net.  Orders for fruit will be placed soon after that date. Mark your calendars!! All help appreciated!!  For the Masonic widows who live away from the Irving area, a Christmas Card and a small present is mailed to each.

CLEAN-UP PARTY

Thanks to the worker bees we had a very successful cleanup of the Lodge.  On Oct 25th nine of us met at Joe’s for breakfast and then went to the Lodge, where two more brothers had already started working, and cleaned the Lodge from top to bottom.  We were done by 10:30 AM.

Hopefully this can lead to a monthly clean-up of the Lodge building and outside areas.  This is not a closed group, anyone who has the time for an hour or so Saturday morning can join us, the more the quicker we are through.  Any Brother that sees something that needs to be done around the Lodge should list it with Secretary John Thalacker so that it can be taken care of.

Our next clean up shall be Saturday December 6th.  At 8am, we will meet at PJ’s for breakfast, and then meet at Lodge at 9am.  This time we will clean up the parking and front of lodge, clean bathrooms and any other work needed.  Anyone who has a leaf blower please bring it.  If you can make this next clean-up party, call Dean Donaldson or the Secretary (972) 253-5600 and let them know if you are coming, so that we can notify PJ’s on how many will be for breakfast.

IT’S DUES PAYING TIME AGAIN

The Secretary has received the Dues Cards from the Grand Secretary and would remind every member that dues are due by December 31, 2014 for the calendar year 2015.  The Dues in Irving Lodge remain $100.00 per year and are always due in advance.  Now is the time to remit your dues and get your 2015 dues receipt card.

The Lodge would greatly appreciate any of our members who might remember Irving Masonic Lodge in their wills or other forms of donations.

REVIEW OF PROPOSED LAW CHANGES

The Masonic Laws by which all Masons and Lodges operate are constantly being adjusted to meet the current needs of the Fraternity.  The proposed changes to be considered at the Grand Lodge Annual Communication (December 3 - 6, 2014) will be reviewed at a meeting of the Masters Wardens and Secretaries Association to be held at the Texas Scottish Rite Hospital Auditorium on Wednesday November 19th, 2014 at 7:30pm.  A Reviewer will discuss each of the proposed changes and attempt to explain the intent of the Resolutions.  Important law changes should be the concern of every Freemason in Texas.  This is a good time to become familiar with the proposed changes and then plan to attend Grand Lodge to find out the how they are rejected, amended or accepted.

WHEN THE MAN’S PUT TOGETHER RIGHT

Father wished for a little relief from answering questions while he read his Sunday paper.  The paper contained a full-page map of the world.  A brilliant idea was born.  Dad took the map to the dining room table, cut it into zig-zag pieces and told his little bunch of questions that she couldn’t ask another until she had put the map together.  He figured two peaceful hours, but in a few minutes the little tot called dad to see the completed work.  “How did you get it together so quickly?” dad wished to know.  “As you started to cut the map up I noticed there was a picture of a man on the other side.  I turned the pieces over, put the man together, and when the man was put together right the whole world was all right.”

I need not point out the moral in that story.  Have we ever had a calamity, have we ever had a crisis, have we ever been in any kind of mess that wasn’t due to men not being put together right?  When men are put together right, the whole world will be all right.  It is Masonry’s job to see that men are put together right.  – Elbert Bede

Brother Giddens was initiated into Freemasonry on May 13th 1960.  He passed to the degree of Fellowcraft on April 17th, 1961.  On May 26th, 1961 Bill was made a Master Mason.  Bill is our most celebrated instructor of Masonic teachings in recent history.  He served as an Officer of the Lodge from 1962 to 1969 when he became Worshipful Master of Irving Masonic Lodge.  Then again in 1976 when he served as Chaplain of the Lodge.
Bill was made a Life Member by the Lodge in 1982.  In 1999 Irving Masonic Lodge elected Brother Giddens to receive our highest honor, the Golden Trowel Award.  In 2010 Past Master Bill Giddens was recognized by the Grand Lodge of Texas with the 50 Year Masonic Service Award.  Both Bill and Ruby made significant contributions as long-time members and Officers of the Eastern Star.  A memorial honoring Brother Giddens is planned for August 16th at 2:00 PM at Irving Masonic Lodge.  Friends are invited to bring a covered dish.

Brother Wendell D. Jones was born in Bardwell, Texas on February 27, 1920.  Brother Jones petitioned Irving Lodge for the Degrees in Freemasonry and on June 12, 1959 he was Initiated an Entered Apprentice Mason.  On April 22, 1960 he passed to the degree of Fellowcraft Mason.  On March 31, 1961 Irving Lodge opened in order to confer three Master Mason Degrees; Brother Jones and two others were made Master Masons in separate ceremonies.  On October 16th, 2010 Brother Wendell D. Jones was recognized by the Grand Lodge of Texas with the 50 Year Masonic Service Award.

Brother Charles F. Turrentine was born in Hale County, Texas on May 4th, 1927.  We only recently learned of Brother Turrentine’s passing on November 10th, 2013.  Brother Turrentine petitioned Irving Masonic Lodge for the three Degrees and was initiated on October 17th, 1952.  He passed to the degree of Fellowcraft on December 19th, 1952.  Quickly demonstrating his proficiency as a Fellowcraft Mason Brother Turrentine was made a Master Mason in due and ancient form on January 26th, 1953.  Brother Charles F. Turrentine was recognized by the Grand Lodge of Texas in 2002 with the 50 Year Masonic Service Award, and again in 2012 with the 60 Year Masonic Service Award.

PUNS

I did a theatrical performance about puns.  It was a play on words.

They told me I had type A blood, but it was a type-O.

What does a clock do when it’s hungry?  It goes back four seconds.

I wondered why the baseball was getting bigger.  Then it hit me!

I dropped out of communism class because of lousy Marx.

My friend's bakery burned down last night. Now his business is toast.

I couldn't quite remember how to throw a boomerang, but eventually it came back to me.

The other day I held the door open for a clown. I thought it was a nice jester.

Following the usual course of progression, Brother Anthony "Tony" Head will be installed as the Worshipful Master.  In addition, other brethren will be installed into their newly elected and appointed offices.

The ceremony is enlightening for those who are not familiar with the intent and purposes of this ancient Order of Freemasonry.

Past Master Dean Alexander will be the Installing Officer and Past Master Dean Donaldson will be the Installing Marshall.  The principles and ideals of Freemasonry are enumerated during the ceremony.

A cordial reception with refreshments will be held in the C. J. Range Memorial Hall downstairs after the Installation Ceremonies.

Everyone loves a parade!  The Worshipful Master has promised that the downstairs of the Lodge building will be open for a break from the heat.  Please do not take the chairs of the lodge outside.  Bring your lawn chair.  The coke box will be open but remember that this is an honor system and the lodge requests a donation of $ .50 for all drinks taken.  Please help us keep down the cost to the lodge for providing these conveniences.

WOW! WHAT A YEAR

I want to thank everyone in Irving Masonic Lodge for the support we received through this Masonic year.  From work in the degrees, teaching the candidates, preparing food for meetings and Family Nights, supporting the Gift of Life blood drives, to attending the Stated Meetings and special events - Thanks.  Dave

LAUGHING MATTERS

One day a Past Master and the newest Entered Apprentice go golfing. The EA is really good and Past Master is giving him tips. They are on hole 8 and there is a tree in the way.  The Past Master says, "When I was your age, I would hit the ball right over that tree."

So, the Entered Apprentice hits the ball and it bumps against the tree and lands not too far from where it started.

"Of course," added the Past Master, "when I was your age, the tree was only 3 feet tall."

Q: What did the tie say to the hat?
A: You go on ahead and I'll hang around

Knock Knock.
Who's there?
Hatch.
Hatch who?
Bless you.

He was Passed to the Degree of Fellow Craft on April 18, 1949.  He was Raised a Master Mason in Irving Lodge on May 27, 1949.  Brother Dorety was approved by the Grand Lodge of Texas to receive the “65 YEAR MASONIC SERVICE AWARD”. Brother Dorety laid down his working tools on April 11, 2014.
We dedicate this bulletin to the memory of Brother Carl W. Dorety.  Our prayers are for peace and consolation for his family.

BBQ BRISKET FAMILY DINNER

Do you like BBQ Brisket?  Then you will want to attend our Saturday, May 17, Family Night at 6:30pm.  This year the Stewards Picnic will change to a night event at the Lodge.  Three of our members - Mark Brisco, Mike Brisco and Ron Coats won third place (35 Texas Lodges participated) in the Masonic Family Day BBQ Cook Off.  What they prepared that day melted in the mouth - it was delicious.  And so Mark is going to bring his BIG trailer cooker to the Lodge parking lot that morning and spend the day preparing the briskets.  The Stewards will prepare beans, coleslaw and potato salad and beverages.  Rolls will be available if you want to make a sandwich.  And of course we will have deserts from which to choose.  Entertainment you ask.  Yes, the Four Points (four of our members) will perform and any others with instruments are offered to jam prior to and after they do their set.  There will not be a set price, but the donation basket will be available and you may contribute as you wish.  Invite your family and friends to come and enjoy a great meal and evening.

INSTALLATION OF OFFICERS

Irving Lodge #1218 A.F. & A.M. is pleased to announce the Open Installation of Officers on Saturday Evening, June 28, 2014 at 7:00 P.M. This Ceremony is open to all Masons, their friends, family, and all who are interested in our Lodge and the Masonic Fraternity. The ceremony is enlightening for those who are not familiar with the intent and purposes of this ancient Order of Freemasonry. Refreshments and a reception will be held downstairs in the C. J. Range Memorial Hall after the installation. Be sure and invite your friends and neighbors.  The Election of Officers will be held at the June 10th Stated Meeting.  The five elected Officers are: Worshipful Master, Senior Warden, Junior Warden, Treasurer, and Secretary.  The remaining officers are appointed by the incoming Worshipful Master.

THE LAST MONTH IS HERE

The last month to get your annual dues paid to Irving Masonic Lodge without being suspended is here. We have 50 who have not paid this year's dues. If the Lodge is required to suspend a member for non-payment of dues, it means that all Plural Lodges and appendant bodies are required to suspend him also.  June 23 is the last day before a suspension is issued.  Please check your dues card.  It should read “Dues paid through 12/31/2014”.  Contact the Worshipful Master or Secretary if a problem exists in which we can help.

OUR DEDICATED WORSHIPFUL MASTER

As we end the Masonic Year of 2013-2014 we want to take time to thank Worshipful Master David Gisler, whose term of office will come to a close. Worshipful David Gisler has dedicated six terrific years to serving as an Officer of Irving Lodge #1218.  It is not always an easy job, nor is it always convenient to do those things which a man is called on to do as an Officer of a Masonic Lodge.  Thank you David!  We are so proud of you!

BLOODY FUNNY

A teacher was giving a lesson on the circulation of blood. Trying to make the matter clearer, she said, “Now class, if I stood on my head, the blood, as you know, would run into it, and I would turn red in the face.” “Yes,” the class said. “Then why is it that while I am standing upright in the ordinary position the blood doesn’t run into my feet?” A little fellow shouted, “Cause your feet aren’t empty.”

I asked a Phlebotomist out for a date ... she said I wasn't her type!

Lose 1 pound in 10 minutes.  Donate blood on June 7th at the Irving Mall.  Next to Los Lupes, Noon - 6:00
Benefitting the Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children

GOLDEN TROWEL AWARD

Irving Masonic Lodge is pleased to recognize and celebrate the election of Brother Loyd Hinch for the prestigious Golden Trowel Award.   Share this special occasion with him on Saturday evening, April 26th at 6:30 P.M.  The Golden Trowel Award is the highest award a lodge can bestow upon an individual member.  Please join us as we unite together and honor one who deserves to be honored.

The lodge will provide the meat, bread, and drinks. Others are asked to bring their favorite dish of salad, vegetable, or dessert. The dinner and presentation are open and we invite all masons, their families, and friends.

ABOUT STUDY CLUB

We have a group of 8 to 12 who come to learn.  This is necessary for those Brothers advancing through the chairs, as they learn not only the wording but also the motions, e.g. When to gavel, when to stand, when to move, etc.  We work on opening and closing in all the degrees and Conferring degrees.  It is almost impossible to learn all the wording in this short time, so the Brothers have to learn a lot outside this study time.  They come to Study Club to get it all together.  Questions and situations that arise are worked on.  There is usually someone at lodge during the evening to work with those Entered Apprentice or Fellowcraft Masons who need help.  We can schedule evenings to include those Brothers in a Study Club session.

If any of you Brothers are feeling left out, we would enjoy having you come and join us for a learning and fellowship evening.  Study Club is held Tuesday nights starting at 6:30 PM (excluding the 2nd Tuesday of the month) and ending at 8:00 PM.

MASONRY IS REAL SIMPLE

"Masons are just men of high moral character who believe in a Supreme Spiritual Being, and who judge other men only by their character and not by their worldly belongings. Our bonds of Brotherhood allow us to go to Lodges throughout the world and although we have never met, we will be welcomed with open arms."

Andrew S. Young, Secretary - Tomball Lodge No. 1096

LAUGHING MATTERS

A police recruit was asked during the exam, 'What would you do if you had to arrest your own mother?'   He answered, 'Call for backup.'

STUDENT: Class started before I got here.

TEACHER: John, why are you doing your math multiplication on the floor?
JOHN: You told me to do it without using tables.

TEACHER: Glen, why do you always get so dirty?
GLEN: Well, I'm a lot closer to the ground than you are.

911 instructions
Two hunters are out in the woods when one of them collapses. He's not breathing and his eyes are glazed, so his friend calls 911.
"My friend is dead! What should I do?"
The operator replies "Calm down, sir. I can help.  First make sure that he's dead."
There's a silence, then a loud bang.
Back on the phone, the guy says, "Ok, now what?"

IN APPRECIATION

There are some jobs which are a part of an officer’s responsibilities in a Masonic Lodge.  An accepted chore for the Stewards is to provide refreshments at our meetings.  Over the past 20 years that chore has evolved into one of major responsibilities.  It is now expected by the membership of Irving Lodge that on Stated Meeting nights, a satisfying meal will be provided prior to the meeting.  On Degree nights they provide the same before the Meeting and on Monday evenings when no degrees are scheduled, a snack bar is supplied.  This is more than just a minor chore for the Stewards and deserves a show of appreciation from the members to the Stewards.   Shake their hands and thank them for their extra efforts to satisfy you.
